The Shivering Timbers is what I can describe as a great safe for kids roller coaster. This ride looks very plain and simple but yet again it looks fast and thrilling with fourteen downward drops. It is based at the theme park Michigan’s Adventure in Muskegon County, Michigan.
It was designed and constructed by Custom Coasters International and was opened in May 1998. The ride only took one year to build as they started in 1997. The unique toboggans for the ride were made by Philadelphia Toboggan Coasters. The crazy out and back layout is a mad 5383 feet long making it the 6th longest wooden rollercoaster in the world.
The Shivering Timbers starts with a left turn out of the station and on to staggering 122 feet lift hill. At the base of the lift hill, the train reaches its maximum speed of 57 mph (91.7 km/h). Following the lift hill are two camelback hills, the first being 100 ft (30.5 m) tall, and the second being 95 feet (29 m) tall. In these hills, riders experience “ejector air-time.” The train then jumps a bunny hop and another camelback hill and a double-up hill, before turning around for the second half of its course. After the turnaround, the train hits another bunny hop and another double-up hill. After the double-up hill is a unique element known as a “trick track,” in which the track banks from side to side, on an otherwise flat section. After the trick track, there is a series of 5 bunny hop hills. After the last hill there is an on-ride photo camera, so a great time to pull a stupid face. The ride finishes with a mad 680 degree helix back to the station platform.
The roller coaster capacity can ride up to 1200 riders per hour making those long frustrating queue times bearable. This might not be one of the fastest wooden roller coasters in the world but rising at 125 feet above the ground and descending 107 feet over a maximum speed of 57 miles per hour, in my opinion, it’s worth the ride!
