Dragon Kahn I would have to say is one of my all-time favorites! I went last year for the second time, with a group of friends. PortAventura theme park is based in Salou, Catalonia, Spain.
The Dragon Kahn is a steel sit down roller coaster with eight inversions, yes I said ‘eight’! It held the world record for the most inversions until 2002, when the ride Colossus in Thorpe Park, based in the United Kingdom took the throne with 10 inversions. This is another breathtaking roller coaster that I have ridden. Dragon Kahn has one of the biggest vertical loops in the world, standing at 118 feet high, Which makes you feel like your heart falls into your stomach as you plow round at such speed!
The ride was built by my favorite manufacturer, Bolliger & Mabilliard and designed by the genius Werner Stengel John Wardley! It opened on May 2nd, 1995 and was one of two roller coasters that opened that very same day.
Dragon Khan can be seen from outside the park with its stands out with its cool, white and pastel blue supports. I remember seeing it as we were trying to get parked in the car park and I was thinking to myself, “This has to be, the most loops I have ever seen on a roller coaster!” Funny enough, it was the first ride we went on, and the best ride we had been on the whole day. There are 3 trains that are blue, green and purple. The ride can hold up to 28 riders per train, which is great for those long queues on rides. Everybody hates them!
So we were all sitting in the train ready to go, with my heart pumping and my adrenaline running through my veins when all of a sudden, “Click”. The sound of us getting ready to climb up the lift hill, 148 feet high. When you get to the top you make a sharp turn to the right and then plummet down a 118 feet drop, followed by a headfirst loop a zero-G roll and a cobra roll,. Riders then get a small break at the ride’s trim brakes before coming back down into a slighter upright loop and then onto the last two inversions – the linking corkscrews. The ride then yanks up into the brake run before re-entering the Chinese-themed station. The track is 4,165 feet long and the ride’s top speed is over 65 mph. The duration of the Dragon Kahn isn’t the longest but definitely one of the most exciting roller coasters out there!
If you’re in the area, then I really do suggest going to PortAventura . Dragon Kahn is on my personal top ten steel roller coasters, and I would definitely go back there a third time!
