  • Coaster Information:

The Balder roller coaster located in Liseber, Sweden is a wooden coaster, it is very different from your traditional roller coaster because it’s a prefabricated coaster, this means instead of trackers cutting and shaping the parts then laying it down by hand so it fits into any area, it was in fact laser cut to perfection in a factory then put together like a giant jigsaw puzzle on site. Since it was cut via lasers, the precision level is far greater than that of a cut by hand design. The track is also made of many more layers of wood that are very tightly bonded together rather than nailed together like a normal wooden coaster, this gives us us 3 main benefits!

The “plug and play” aspect of this roller coaster allows the construction to be much quicker which in addition gives cheaper construction rates. The riders benefit from this type of coaster as the ride is very close to steel smoothness while riding it, some people would say this takes away the experience of a wooden coaster!

Balder roller coaster opened its gates in 2003 and was an instant success, since its debut it has been voted the best wooden roller coaster in the world in 2003 and 2005 by a major international poll, this is not because of the height of the coast or because of the speed of it but more simply because of the amount of “air time” the rider feels while riding it!
The air time is achieved over a distance of 3510.5 feet or 1070 meters, it will reach a top speed of 55.9mp/h or 90km/h in some areas of the ride. The ride time of this wooden roller coaster is just over two minutes (00:02:08) so there is plenty of time to enjoy the twists and turns of this wooden beast.

Over all we have to say that this may just be one of the better wooden roller coasters we have reviewed so far, it may not have the capacity of riders per hour (1149 per hour) like other roller coaster but it certainly has the feel and speed coupled with the un-rivaled air time of any wooden coaster in the world.
